Kristi Noem Out as DHS Chief After Criticism Over Immigration Raids and Disaster Response
U.S. President Donald Trump fired Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary, because many people, including Republicans and Democrats, criticized her work. She had been receiving anger for her actions in immigration raids, giving aid in disasters, and referring to two U.S. citizens slain by immigration officers as “terrorists,” but videos later showed she was wrong. Mr. Trump stated that he is going to make Noem a Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas and is going to nominate Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace her. Noem's department had been criticized for expensive ad blitzes urging illegal immigrants to leave, for giving aid in disasters slowly, and for aggressive raids by ICE in large cities that sometimes captured U.S. citizens mistakenly. Mullin agrees with Mr. Trump's hardline immigration policies, so actions similar to Noem's could continue.
